A Lifetime of Stories

Founded on March 18, 1988, Copies Concordia has spent nearly four decades turning ideas into things you can hold — first as a copy shop serving a university district, now as a design and production studio.

It started with a simple problem. In the late 1980s, printing in the neighbourhood was slow and restricted. An independent entrepreneur saw the gap and opened at 1520 Boulevard de Maisonneuve Ouest — a small walk-down space, open to anyone who needed a document produced properly.

Through the 1990s and 2000s the shop became something closer to essential infrastructure for the street. In December 1997 the business changed hands, and the new owner understood that a downtown studio couldn't keep corporate 9-to-5 hours. It stayed open late, filled the floor with workstations, and held on through the years when the neighbourhood ran on printed course packs and club flyers.

What changed was the work, not the appetite for it. The city kept asking for more print, faster and in smaller runs — cards one week, banners the next, a full set of signage the week after. So the shop invested in digital presses: no plates, no minimum order, and a job that can be checked and rerun the same day.

Today Copies Concordia produces digital print for businesses and professionals across Montreal. The photocopiers gave way to digital presses and large-format machines, and the shop moved around the corner to a street-level space at 2080-B Crescent St.. Four decades in, it's still part of how this city gets things printed.
